GENESIS 6:1-2 “And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”
KEYWORD: Through judgment, God preserved a righteous lineage through which redemption would come, protecting His covenant purpose for humanity.
Many people assume that everyone walking on the earth is merely human, but Scripture reveals that the spiritual realm has always interacted with the natural realm. When the Bible refers to the “sons of God” in our opening passage, it is widely understood in Scripture to refer to angelic beings. In this context, it points to angels who rebelled against God and abandoned their original habitation, as also referenced in Jude 1:6.
When Genesis states that the sons of God saw the daughters of men and took them as wives, it speaks of a grave violation of divine order. These fallen angels, now corrupt spiritual beings, unlawfully crossed boundaries established by God. Their actions resulted in deep corruption within humanity and the created order. God did not create mankind merely to populate the earth; He created man in His image, beginning with Adam, to exercise dominion and to fill the earth with a godly seed that reflected His nature and authority.
Genesis 6:4 records, “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
The offspring produced from this corruption are described as giants, mighty men, and men of renown. These beings were no longer functioning within God’s original design for humanity. The earth became polluted, distorted, and increasingly dominated by violence and rebellion. Satan exploited this disorder to expand wickedness, influencing human society through deception, oppression, and moral decay.
Genesis 6:5 further declares, “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Adam’s fall alone did not immediately result in this extreme level of corruption. Scripture shows that even after the fall, men such as Enoch walked with God and pleased Him, as seen in Genesis 5:24 and Hebrews 11:5. However, in the days described in Genesis 6, God looked upon the earth and saw widespread corruption, violence, and chaos. His original purpose for creation had been deeply defiled.
Many mistakenly view God’s judgment in this account as cruelty or wrath without cause. Yet a careful reading of Scripture reveals God’s actions to be rooted in justice, mercy, and the preservation of His redemptive plan. Humanity had become enslaved under overwhelming demonic influence. The freedom of choice God intended for man was compromised, and the thoughts and imaginations of the human heart were continually evil. God could not allow such corruption to destroy His purpose for redemption, which would ultimately come through Christ.
Thus, divine judgment was not an act of hatred, but an act of restraint against unchecked evil, ensuring that God’s plan for salvation and restoration would not be extinguished. Through judgment, God preserved a righteous lineage through which redemption would come, protecting His covenant purpose for humanity. Even in judgment, God’s mercy was at work, safeguarding the future of mankind and preparing the way for the ultimate revelation of grace through Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!
