NEHEMIAH 11:1–2: “And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities. And the people blessed all the men that willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem.”
KEYWORD: God is still seeking men and women who will offer themselves willingly, without reservation, counting His purpose greater than their own interests.
If you look closely at our opening scripture, you will see how lots were cast to decide who would dwell in Jerusalem after the Israelites returned from captivity. The walls were broken and in ruins, and the people who had been left behind were experiencing great affliction from enemies on every side. We then see Nehemiah desiring to see Israel’s walls rebuilt. He took out time to pray and fast before the Lord. God heard him and granted him favour with King Artaxerxes.
Empowered with resources and given the authority to rebuild, Nehemiah returned to the homeland with a large number of Israelites. However, the state in which they found Jerusalem was extremely porous and exposed to constant attacks. Even though the work began, it quickly became evident that the enemy had no intention of allowing them to work in peace. Individuals like Sanballat and Tobiah constantly mocked the work and placed hindrances along their path.
Despite this, Nehemiah and the Israelites were not deterred. They made up their minds to do what was needful, trusting God to see them through. The realization soon came that some people would have to live in the city of Jerusalem despite the dangers involved, and as a result, lots were cast. However, some people stood out because they willingly offered themselves to be on the frontline.
In doing so, they did not dwell on what might happen to them. Instead, they resolved to be where they were most needed. Their willingness to serve caused the people to pronounce blessings upon them. Today, I ask you this question. Are you serving out of necessity, or are you serving willingly? Are you doing the things of God because you love Jesus and genuinely value the souls He has entrusted into your care, or are you merely acting out of obligation? Have you allowed convenience, fear, or personal comfort to dictate the extent of your service to God? God is still seeking men and women who will offer themselves willingly, without reservation, counting His purpose greater than their own interests.
If you find that you have been holding back, then God is calling you to reflect on this today. He is inviting you to move beyond reluctant service into joyful obedience, where your heart aligns with His will. Choose to be among those who step forward when others draw back, those who say yes to God even when the path is uncertain. Such willingness does not go unnoticed by God, and it attracts both His approval and His blessing. Shalom.
PRAYER:
Father Lord, I ask that You help my heart today to be filled with love, genuine care, and compassion that makes me serve willingly and not out of compulsion. Help me to render service that truly pleases You in every way this year, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
