GENESIS 4:7 “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”
KEYWORD: When a man consistently ignores God’s ways, he gradually steps out of alignment and becomes vulnerable to wrong influences and destructive decisions.
The Scriptures are filled with the accounts of men. Some reflecting wisdom, others revealing downfall. God did not permit these records without purpose. Whatever the Spirit of God allowed to be written is for our learning, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
Our second case study is Cain, the first son of Adam. The Bible tells us that in the process of time, both sons brought offerings unto the Lord. This reveals that they were already familiar with the concept of offering and sacrifice. Even in the garden, after the fall, God clothed Adam and Eve with coats of skins (Genesis 3:21), which suggests a divine pattern of covering that pointed to deeper spiritual realities.
It is therefore evident that Cain and Abel were not acting in ignorance. They approached God with offerings, yet the Scripture makes it clear that God had respect unto Abel and to his offering, but unto Cain and his offering He had not respect. The difference was not merely in the act, but in the heart, the quality, and the faith behind it. Abel offered by faith and gave his best, while Cain approached casually.
When God said to Cain, “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?” He revealed a crucial truth: Cain had the opportunity to do right, but chose otherwise. This shows that whenever light is given and ignored, consequences follows.
Any truth or instruction you receive from God that you treat lightly will not profit you. Scripture teaches that to him who knows to do good and does it not, it is sin. Light rejected does not leave a man the same, it exposes him to greater danger.
Cain’s response to correction exposed the state of his heart. Instead of humbling himself, he allowed anger and resentment to grow. Eventually, this opened the door for sin to take advantage of him, and he rose against his brother and killed him. The Bible later describes Cain as being of that wicked one (1 John 3:12), showing that his actions aligned with the influence of evil.
This is the danger of trivializing spiritual instructions. When a man consistently ignores God’s ways, he gradually steps out of alignment and becomes vulnerable to wrong influences and destructive decisions.
Beloved, do not treat the things of God casually. Whether His Word, His instructions, or His dealings with your heart. Every instruction from God carries life and protection. Guard your heart, honor divine instructions, and respond rightly when God corrects you. This is how you remain preserved, aligned, and useful in His hands. Selah.
PRAYER:
Dear Heavenly Father, teach me to develop a heart that is excellent in thoughts and actions like Yours. A heart that is always willing to obey Your principles and ordinances and never to treat spiritual things lightly. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
FURTHER STUDY:
1 JOHN 3:12 “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.”
HEBREWS 11:4 “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”
