MATTHEW 13:12 “For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.”
KEYWORD: God entrusts His gifts, grace, and opportunities to everyone, but He especially increases those who value, nurture, and faithfully use what He has given them.
Many people misunderstand the theme scripture and assume it means God is unfair; giving more to some while taking from others. However, when read in context, Jesus was speaking about how people respond to God’s Word.
In Gospel of Matthew 13, Jesus teaches through parables, especially the Parable of the Sower. The focus is not material gain, but spiritual understanding. Those who “have” are those who hear, understand, and embrace God’s truth. To them, more insight, wisdom, and revelation are given. But those who ignore or treat God’s Word lightly begin to lose even the little understanding they once had.
Think of it like light: when you walk in the light you have, more light comes. But when you ignore it, darkness increases. Imagine a family with five children raised in a wealthy household. From the beginning, they all benefit from the privileges and opportunities available to them.
As time goes on, the parents begin to observe their children more closely. They notice that three of them take a genuine interest in understanding how the wealth was built, how the business operates, and what it takes to sustain and grow it. These children ask thoughtful questions, show responsibility, and express a willingness to learn and be involved.
The other two, however, focus only on enjoying the benefits. They gladly spend what is available to them but show little concern for how it was produced or how it can be preserved.
When the time comes to entrust the future of the family business to the next generation, it is only natural that the responsibility is given to those who have demonstrated interest, diligence, and understanding rather than to those who have shown little commitment to stewardship.
It is similar in the kingdom of God. God entrusts His gifts, grace, and opportunities to everyone, but He especially increases those who value, nurture, and faithfully use what He has given them.
God is not partial. He is responsive. He honors hearts that are open, hungry, and willing to grow. This is also reflected in the Parable of the Talents, where increase comes not from equality, but from faithfulness with what one has received.
If you pay attention to God’s Word, meditate on it, and obey it, you will grow in wisdom, grace, and spiritual strength. But if you neglect it, spiritual dullness sets in, and what you once knew begins to fade.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I do not want to lose what You have given me to the enemy. Help me to value what You have generously placed in my hands and to grow it faithfully with Your help. Grant me wisdom to guard what You have entrusted to me and never to give the enemy access in any area of my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
