THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST (I)

LUKE 9:23–24 “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.”

KEYWORD: Though salvation is received by faith, the practical outworking of Christ’s Lordship must continually unfold in the life of the believer.

Most Christians have not fully come to understand the Lordship of Christ in their daily walk, even after surrendering their lives to Him. Many have embraced Him as Saviour, but have not yet allowed Him to fully reign as Lord over every area of their lives. This is because salvation is not merely an escape from challenges. It is an invitation into a life of complete surrender, submission, and transformation under the leadership of Christ.

When a person says, “Lord Jesus, come into my life,” whether at the altar or in a moment of conviction, that declaration is far more than words spoken in emotion. It is an exchange of ownership. It is the yielding of self, ambitions, desires, and control to the authority of Jesus Christ. It is the acknowledgment that from that moment forward, your life no longer belongs to you, but to the One who redeemed you by His blood.
However, many make this confession without fully grasping the depth of what it means. Though salvation is received by faith, the practical outworking of Christ’s Lordship must continually unfold in the life of the believer. This is why some genuinely saved believers still struggle with areas of “self.” It is not because Christ is absent, but because His Lordship must be consciously yielded to in every area of life.

The Lordship of Christ means Jesus Christ becomes the governing authority of your life. It means His will takes precedence over your preferences. His instructions become final. His desires become your pursuit. The old self is crucified, and His life is expressed through you daily. This is not a one-time event. It is a daily reality. Matthew 16:24 says, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

To deny self means to reject self-will, self-rule, and self-centered ambition. It is to yield fully to the leading and authority of Christ, even when His instructions confront personal desires. Yet this generation celebrates self-exaltation. Expressions such as “do what makes you happy” and “follow your truth” have become widely embraced as wisdom. But wherever self is enthroned above the will of God, deception is already at work.

The kingdom of God was never designed to revolve around self-fulfillment. It is built upon surrender. As a believer, whenever you begin to notice the dominance of self, rising within you, whether through the craving for gratification, resistance to correction, independence from God’s leading, or rebellion against spiritual authority, you must respond quickly. Recognize it as both the activity of the flesh and an opportunity for spiritual warfare. That is the moment for prayer, consecration, and realignment.

Jesus Himself demonstrated perfect submission. Though He existed in glory, He humbled Himself, took upon Himself the form of a servant, and submitted completely to the will of the Father. From the moment of salvation, every believer is called into this same pattern of living. The continual denial of self. The daily expression of Christ. The practical outworking of His Lordship.

We see in Matthew 10:38 “And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.” To carry your cross is to embrace the life of surrender. It is to choose His will above your own. It is to live every day with the consciousness that Christ is Lord. And where His Lordship is truly established, His life is fully revealed. Glory to God!

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, I lay down every expression of self-will and selfish desire. Let every part of me that still resists Your Lordship be surrendered to Your life in me. I choose daily to live under the Lordship of Christ, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
