SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 34:28 “And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.”
KEYWORD: When fasting is done with the right mindset: humility, sincerity, and a hunger for God, you will not come out empty.
Fasting is not merely an act of abstaining from food; it is a spiritual exercise designed to draw you into deeper fellowship with God. When you fast and pray, your expectation should not be limited to physical discipline, but to spiritual alignment; an increased sensitivity to God’s voice, His will, and His presence.
In the opening scripture, Moses remained with the Lord for forty days and forty nights without food or water. This was not an ordinary fast, but a unique encounter sustained by God Himself. It reveals that the essence of fasting is not the duration, but the depth of communion with God. When a man truly dwells with the Lord, natural limitations begin to give way to spiritual realities.
When you fast with understanding, your spirit becomes more yielded and attentive. It is in this state of consecration that clarity comes, direction is received, and your inner man is strengthened. This is why many ministers give themselves to fasting before major assignments, not merely for outward results, but to be rightly positioned inwardly before God. What is released publicly is often a reflection of what was received in the secret place.
However, it must be understood that fasting does not sustain God’s presence in your life; your relationship with Him does. Fellowship through the Word, prayer, obedience, and a yielded heart is what maintains spiritual vitality. Fasting only enhances your sensitivity and alignment; it does not replace daily walk with God.
As you grow in this, you will notice that certain burdens begin to rise within your spirit. But you must discern carefully: are these burdens born from God or from your emotions? When your heart is aligned with God, He places His desires within you, and grace is released in that direction for you to pray and act accordingly.
David expressed this rightly in Psalm 63:2: “To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.” His desire was not for things, but for God Himself.
When fasting is done with the right mindset: humility, sincerity, and a hunger for God, you will not come out empty. You will come out strengthened, aligned, and more attuned to the Spirit. And as you continue in fellowship, what you have received will not fade, but will grow and find expression in your life. Hallelujah!
PRAYER:
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the privilege and grace given to abstain from the necessities of life in order to seek You in fasting. As I fellowship with You, burden my heart with the things that truly matter to You if I do not already carry such a burden. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
