HEBREWS 12:16–17 “Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.”
KEYWORD: A heart that continually disregards spiritual instruction will eventually lose sensitivity to God.
It is very costly for a believer to treat spiritual things casually. It is a dangerous path to tread, no matter who you are. You must be careful about the things you say and the actions you take, because God does not merely look at outward actions, He sees and judges the heart. Nothing is hidden before Him.
In Genesis 25:33, the Scripture says: “And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.” Esau is described in the Bible as a profane person. One who places little or no value on spiritual matters. To him, spiritual things were ordinary and expendable. He traded his birthright for a single meal and confirmed it with an oath, not discerning the weight and eternal significance of what he was giving away.
Esau failed to understand the value of what had been entrusted to him. He assumed he could act carelessly and still retain the blessing. But the things of the Spirit do not respond to carelessness. When spiritual matters are despised, the consequences are often irreversible. The Scripture tells us that although he later sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what had already been done.
This attitude did not begin in a moment, it was cultivated over time. A heart that continually disregards spiritual instruction will eventually lose sensitivity to God. We see this further in his life when he married from among the daughters of the land, disregarding the counsel and displeasure of his parents. Genesis 26:34–35 “And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.”
Beloved, God cannot be mocked. Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap. When you begin to treat spiritual things lightly, whether it is God’s Word, His presence, His instructions, or His house, you are sowing seeds that will produce consequences. Be careful when you think you can say anything or act without restraint, especially concerning the things of God. Be careful when your opinions begin to outweigh God’s Word. The moment human perspective becomes more important than divine instruction, it is a sign that your heart needs realignment.
Place value on the things of the Spirit. Honor what God honors. Guard your heart, because your response to spiritual things determines what remains in your life and what you may lose. Selah.
PRAYER:
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your word that has come to me today. I reject and remove every attitude in me that trivializes spiritual things or questions spiritual authority in a wrong way. Help me not to lose my inheritance in You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
