MALACHI 3:5 “And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.”
KEYWORD: Whenever a believer abandons wholehearted devotion to God for something else, it is a form of spiritual unfaithfulness.
Many times when we hear the word “adulterers,” we immediately imagine a married person cheating on his or her spouse. If we have some Bible knowledge, we may even think of the adulterous woman who was brought before Jesus to be condemned, but whom Jesus chose to show mercy instead. In today’s devotional, however, we are not speaking about that type of adultery. We are speaking about an adultery that takes place in a man’s heart and soul. An adultery that displeases God greatly and grieves His heart.
An adulterer in this context is a person who knowingly turns away from God to pursue other gods, idols, or anything that takes God’s place in his heart. Some do this with deliberate intention, making it clear that they are not being forced but are willing participants. They become consumed with serving things that are not the one true God. Just as the Canaanites gave themselves over to idolatry and evil practices, so many today allow themselves to be drawn away from God by the desires of their hearts.
It is as though they harden their hearts against God’s voice, refusing to listen, obey, or yield to His leading. Some fall into this form of spiritual adultery because of offense, bitterness, or wounds they have refused to surrender to God. In their desire for revenge or personal gain, they begin to follow paths that are contrary to God’s will. Others pursue power, wealth, influence, or worldly pleasures, allowing these things to occupy the place that belongs to God alone.
They refuse to remain on the path God has prepared for them, a path that leads to life, holiness, and a glorious future. Instead, they turn away from God and give their devotion to other things. The Bible refers to the Church as the bride of Christ and Christ as the Bridegroom. Therefore, whenever a believer abandons wholehearted devotion to God for something else, it is a form of spiritual unfaithfulness.
Are you an adulterer in this sense? Has your heart slowly drifted away from God and become attached to things that now compete for your devotion? Have other pursuits taken the place of your love for Him? The good news is that God still calls His people back to Himself. He is merciful and willing to restore every heart that genuinely returns to Him. The choice is yours today. Will you return to the Lord and renew your devotion to Him, or will you continue on a path that leads away from Him? Shalom!
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, search my heart and show me if I have strayed from Your holy and righteous path. Reveal every idol and every affection that seeks to take Your place in my life. Guide me back to wholehearted devotion and help me to honour You alone as my Lord and God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
