1 KINGS 2:5–6 “Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.”
KEYWORD: Not every relationship is ordained to strengthen your walk with God, and not every connection should be given unrestricted access to your heart and destiny.
When you read today’s opening Scripture, you may wonder why King David was so determined that Solomon deal wisely with Joab. After all, Joab had served David for many years as captain of the army and had fought many battles faithfully for Israel. He helped secure victories and stood with David through difficult seasons. Yet despite all this, Joab repeatedly revealed a dangerous character. He acted violently without restraint, ignored instructions, and killed men David had not permitted him to touch, including Abner, Amasa, and even Absalom, David’s own son.
Joab’s problem was not merely anger. It was a heart unwilling to submit fully to righteous authority. Whenever his emotions or personal interests were involved, he acted according to his own judgment regardless of God’s order or the king’s command. David eventually recognized that regardless of Joab’s usefulness, his character made him dangerous.
Many people keep certain relationships around simply because of history, loyalty, usefulness, or past help received. But when a person consistently reveals destructive patterns, rebellion, manipulation, or harmful behavior without repentance, wisdom demands discernment and detachment.
Not every long standing association should continue unchecked. This does not mean hatred or revenge, but it does require recognizing when someone has become a thorn capable of causing damage if left unaddressed.
Some people repeatedly reveal who they are through their actions, yet many ignore the warning signs until serious harm occurs. Ask God for discernment concerning the relationships around your life. Not every relationship is ordained to strengthen your walk with God, and not every connection should be given unrestricted access to your heart and destiny. May God give you wisdom to discern the relationships that strengthen your walk and the ones that must be handled with caution, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
PRAYER:
Father, open my eyes today to the thorns that must be removed from my path and life. Help me to discern clearly who I should no longer associate with, or that idol I have kept in my heart. As I listen to you, Lord, I receive strength to obey you, in Jesus’ name.

2 SAMUEL 3:27 “And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:”
2 SAMUEL 20:10 “But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.”
