THE THORN THAT MUST BE REMOVED (III)

1 KINGS 4:24 “For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.”

KEYWORD: Some things may appear useful outwardly, yet carry seeds of destruction within them.

King David, being a man of the Spirit, understood when God told him that he would not be the one to build Him a house because he had been a man of war. He discerned that Solomon’s reign would be different, a reign marked by peace and stability. It became clear to him that Solomon would not need to fight battles the way he had, and that this was one of the reasons God permitted Solomon to build the temple.
David also understood something else concerning Joab. As seen in 1 Kings 2:5, Joab was a man who had shed blood in times of peace and acted violently without restraint. David knew that such a man could become dangerous within a peaceful kingdom. He understood that Solomon could not afford to keep around someone whose uncontrolled actions could one day threaten the stability of the kingdom.
That is why he instructed Solomon in wisdom, saying, “Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.”
Thankfully, Solomon discerned the seriousness of his father’s counsel and acted wisely. Later, Joab aligned himself with Adonijah in an attempt to establish another king against Solomon. In doing so, he exposed the condition of his heart and gave Solomon the occasion to deal with the matter completely.
Ironically, Joab, who had once disregarded divine order and righteous instruction, later ran to the altar seeking preservation for himself. Yet judgment still came upon him, and Solomon instructed Benaiah to remove him from the kingdom. In this way, Israel was purged from a destructive influence that had long remained unchecked.
There are times when God, in His wisdom, points out certain habits, relationships, attitudes, or influences that must be removed from your life. If ignored, they may eventually grow into greater trouble. Some things may appear useful outwardly, yet carry seeds of destruction within them.
Do not ignore what God is revealing to you. Ask Him for wisdom, courage, and discernment to obey fully. When God calls for separation, it is often because He is preserving your peace, purpose, and future. Shalom!

PRAYER:
Thank you for your wisdom mightily at work in me right now to distinguish between the good and bad around me. Help me not to harbour a viper in my bosom but to open up immediately when you speak, so that I may stand strong in you all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name.

FURTHER STUDY:
2 SAMUEL 3:39 “And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.”
1 KINGS 2:29,31 “And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him. And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.”
